The intent of this work is to better understand the existent relations between the representations that are built inside and outside school and in what way students’ socialisation and motivation as well as the teaching and learning processes are influenced by the referred representations. We also intend to clarify how students understand the school comprehension phenomenon and its objectives.

In order to carry out this empirical work, we selected junior high level students from the Escola Secundária Jorge Peixinho do Montijo and constituted three groups, namely from the 7th, th and 9th grades. We also studied, through an enquiry, the way students see school and classes in particular and the relations between that perception and their attitudes towards the learning process.

The results achieved during the analyses of the empirical material show that each different method used to reach students originates a different image of the school. These images are articulated in a convergent or divergent mode in conjunction with those which are created outside of the school. We concluded that school representations originate a different involvement on the behalf of each student throughout their learning process and school life, and that 7th grade students are those who most frequently affirm their sense of belonging to school activities and to school in general. This fact leads us to a deep reflection.
