Face aux nouveautés qui ont entre-temps émergé, en affectant le terrain, le moment est venu de réévaluer cette thèse. Mais je commence par introduire brièvement le contexte de la présence musulmane en Europe et par souligner quelques particularités du cas portugais. Je me suis concentré sur quatre nouveautés qui lancent de nouvelles questions sur le terrain: (i)les nouveaux modèles migratoires; (ii)la maturité de la deuxième génération, (iii) un plus grand intérêt public causé par le 11 Septembre;(iv) la nouvelle découverte du passé médiéval. Et, pour couvrir toute la dynamique existante sur le terrain, je propose de distinguer trois phases historiques: la pré-décolonisation, la décolonisation et l’après-décolonisation.]]></p></abstract>

With recent developments affecting this whole field, it is time to reassess that theory. Prior to this, the article provides a brief introduction to the context of the Muslim presence in Europe, underlining certain specific aspects of the Portuguese case. I focus on four new developments which have raised issues in this area: (i) new patterns of immigration; (ii) the maturing of the second generation; (iii) greater public interest following September 11; (iv) the discovery of the medieval past.
