Pioneiro no estudo da multidão por este prisma, Zola antecipa uma mudança de tom dos estudiosos da multidão do final do século XIX, como G. Tarde e G. Le Bon. Em Multidão de Lourdes (1906), J.-K. Huysmans consolida o conceito, mas integra-o no catolicismo. Este ensaio pretende devolver à multidão religiosa da sociedade industrial e cosmopolita o lugar que lhe coube na reflexão da época sobre o fenómeno da multidão.]]></p></abstract>

Pionnier dans l’étude des foules vues sous ce prisme, Zola anticipe un changement de ton chez les studieux des foules à la fin du XIXe siècle, tels G. Tarde et G. Le Bon. Dans Les foules de Lourdes (1906), J.-K. Huysmans consolide le concept mais l’insère dans le catholicisme. C’est un essai qui prétend restituer aux foules religieuses de la société industrielle et cosmopolite la place qui leur incombe dans la réflexion de l’époque sur le phénomène des foules.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[In Lourdes (1894), Émile Zola established the model of the passive crowd ready to adopt a «new religion» of justice and happiness but also ready to follow a conservative meneur. As a pioneer in this approach to crowds, Zola foreshadowed a change of emphasis in late nineteenth-century crowd studies, such as those by G. Tarde and G. Le Bon. In The Crowds of Lourdes (1906), J.-K. Huysmans consolidates the concept while integrating it into catholicism. This essay seeks to restore to the religious crowd in the industrial and cosmopolitan age its rightful place in that era’s thought on the phenomenon of the crowd.]]></p></abstract>
