Os ambientes estuarinos constituem uma das áreas mais sensíveis, no quadro das alterações climáticas e da subida do nível do mar, porque se situam na interface entre as influências fluviais e marinhas e são o suporte, não só de áreas húmidas de grande biodiversidade, mas também de actividades económicas de importância estratégica. Estes ambientes registam as mudanças do nível do mar e as modificações operadas nas bacias hidrográficas, quer naturais quer induzidas pela acção humana. Constitui objectivo deste projecto a avaliação do balanço entre as influências marinhas e fluviais, as respostas a eventos climáticos e o impacto das mudanças de uso do solo, numa janela temporal de 5000 anos. They are also strategic areas because of their great biodiversity and the various economic activities they support. These environments record the sea level changes as well as the changes in their drainage basin, whether they are natural or man induced. The goal of the project is to evaluate the balance between marine and fluvial influences, the answers to climatic events and the land use changes impacts, in a 5000 years' time window. Ces environnements enregistrent les changements de niveau de la mer et les modifications subies par les bassins hydrographiques, qu'elles soient naturelles ou induites par l'action humaine. INTRODU&Ccedil;&Atilde;O </b></p>       <p>O presente texto visa divulgar um projecto de investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o apresentado &agrave; Funda&ccedil;&atilde;o para a Ci&ecirc;ncia e Tecnologia (FCT), aprovado  em agosto do ano passado e iniciado em Fevereiro de 2010 (Projecto FCT n&ordm;: PTDC/CTE -GIX/104035/2008). N&atilde;o deve esperar-se, por isso, a apresenta&ccedil;&atilde;o de conclus&otilde;es da investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o  j&aacute; realizada, t&atilde;o somente a divulga&ccedil;&atilde;o do projecto, dos seus objectivos, da metodologia proposta e at&eacute; agora desenvolvida. Trata-se de um projecto multidisciplinar que envolve investigadores  do  Centro de estudos Geogr&aacute;ficos do Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do territ&oacute;rio (IGOT), da Universidade de Lisboa, do Centro de Geologia da Universidade do Porto &#8211; extens&atilde;o na Universidade do  Minho, e do Instituto Tecnol&oacute;gico Nuclear. Conta ainda com a participa&ccedil;&atilde;o de investigadores estrangeiros (italianos e espanh&oacute;is) e consultores nacionais na &aacute;rea da Geologia e da Arqueologia.  </p>        ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><b>&nbsp;</b></p>      <p><b>II. OBJECTIVOS DO PROJECTO </b></p>       <p>O objectivo central do Projecto FMI 5000 &eacute; o de avaliar o balan&ccedil;o entre as influ&ecirc;ncias marinhas e fluviais, as respostas a eventos clim&aacute;ticos e o  impacto das mudan&ccedil;as de uso do solo, numa janela temporal de 5000 anos. </p>       <p>Os sistemas geomorfol&oacute;gicos escolhidos foram os estuarinos. A raz&atilde;o da escolha insere-se na pr&oacute;pria din&acirc;mica de  interface que estes sistemas evidenciam. </p>       <p>Na sequ&ecirc;ncia do &uacute;ltimo m&aacute;ximo glaci&aacute;rio (UMG), em que o n&iacute;vel do mar se situou a aproximadamente -120m, h&aacute; 18 000 anos, os cursos de  &aacute;gua ficaram suspensos ou aprofundaram muito o seu leito. Estes tinham a sua foz muito longe da actual linha de costa, a dist&acirc;ncias da ordem das duas ou tr&ecirc;s dezenas de quil&oacute;metros, dependentes da  morfologia, em especial do declive, da plataforma continental. Gerou-se ent&atilde;o uma morfologia fluvial particular, com entalhes profundos, hoje submersos, mas que por vezes ainda &eacute; poss&iacute;vel reconhecer na  batimetria da plataforma continental (Ramos-Pereira, 1992). </p>       <p>A posterior subida do n&iacute;vel do mar traduziu-se na invas&atilde;o desses vales pela &aacute;gua do mar, que ent&atilde;o se tornou o principal agente de  modela&ccedil;&atilde;o destes entalhes. Por seu lado, os cursos de &aacute;gua, ao acompanharem a subida do n&iacute;vel do mar, foram carreando para os seus tro&ccedil;os vestibulares grande quantidade de sedimentos, de forma  a elevar a sua foz e atingir um novo equil&iacute;brio. </p>       <p>Os v&aacute;rios estudos realizados por diversos investigadores em Portugal apontam para que a estabiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o do n&iacute;vel do mar tenha ocorrido  h&aacute; aproximadamente 3000 anos (Ramos-Pereira <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 1994, Alday <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2006), embora esta data n&atilde;o seja consensual. Importa, contudo, salientar que foi a partir de ent&atilde;o, com a  estabiliza&ccedil;&atilde;o do n&iacute;vel do mar, que a din&acirc;mica litoral, nomeadamente a din&acirc;mica sedimentar marinha e a din&acirc;mica fluvial, tenderam para o equil&iacute;brio com as condi&ccedil;&otilde;es  prevalecentes. </p>       <p>Os enchimentos sedimentares dos actuais estu&aacute;rios evidenciam esta dualidade de alimenta&ccedil;&atilde;o, marinha e fluvial. </p>       <p>No litoral portugu&ecirc;s, a varia&ccedil;&atilde;o do  n&iacute;vel do mar desde o UMG &eacute; apenas conhecida na sua globalidade (Dias <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2000), n&atilde;o existindo uma pormenoriza&ccedil;&atilde;o para o Holoc&eacute;nico. Constitui tamb&eacute;m objectivo  deste projecto fornecer elementos para uma nova curva de varia&ccedil;&atilde;o do n&iacute;vel do mar no Holoc&eacute;nico, n&atilde;o esquecendo eventuais ind&iacute;cios de neotect&oacute;nica (Oliveira, 1986; Granja, 1999;  Granja <i>et</i><i> al.,</i> 2010). </p>       <p>Sabe-se tamb&eacute;m que as condi&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas holoc&eacute;nicas n&atilde;o foram homog&eacute;neas e se traduziram em varia&ccedil;&otilde;es t&eacute;rmicas  bruscas e curtas (nomeadamente os eventos de Bond; Bond <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 1997) ou epis&oacute;dios h&uacute;midos, j&aacute; registados na Pen&iacute;nsula ib&eacute;rica (Swindles <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007,  Mart&iacute;n-Puertas <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, in press). Estas flutua&ccedil;&otilde;es tiveram repercuss&otilde;es no territ&oacute;rio emerso ao n&iacute;vel da vegeta&ccedil;&atilde;o e, consequentemente, na  protec&ccedil;&atilde;o que esta exerce &agrave; eros&atilde;o h&iacute;drica nas vertentes. Estas modifica&ccedil;&otilde;es traduzem-se, nos ambientes fluviais estuarinos, por sedimentos de caracter&iacute;sticas diversas.  </p>       ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>Constitui tamb&eacute;m objectivo deste projecto a detec&ccedil;&atilde;o destas pequenas flutua&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas, seus impactes no territ&oacute;rio e na din&acirc;mica fluvial. </p>       <p>A interven&ccedil;&atilde;o humana no territ&oacute;rio, em especial a partir da idade do Bronze (ca. 35000 anos) &eacute; referida por v&aacute;rios investigadores e est&aacute; impressa no enchimento das plan&iacute;cies  aluviais estuarinas, j&aacute; reconhecida nos sedimentos da plan&iacute;cie aluvial do Tejo (Ramos <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007, Azev&ecirc;do <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007). </p>        <p><b>&nbsp;</b></p>      <p><b>III. ESTU&Aacute;RIOS EM ESTUDO </b></p>       <p>Para atingir o objectivo do projecto, foram seleccionados estu&aacute;rios, situados em diferentes condi&ccedil;&otilde;es ambientais, com bacias hidrogr&aacute;ficas de m&eacute;dia dimens&atilde;o, uma vez que, pela sua  homogeneidade clim&aacute;tica e geomorfol&oacute;gica, permitem definir, com maior precis&atilde;o, os eventos hidroclim&aacute;ticos que contribuem para o enchimento das plan&iacute;cies estuarinas. A an&aacute;lise das  propriedades texturais dos sedimentos, j&aacute; reconhecidas nos estu&aacute;rios dos rios tejo e Guadiana e nos dos pequenos estu&aacute;rios do litoral meridional espanhol (Dabrio <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2000; Azev&ecirc;do  <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007;Vis <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2008, Boski <i>et</i><i> al</i>, 2008), da microfauna, dos p&oacute;lens e dos elementos palinom&oacute;rficos n&atilde;o pol&iacute;nicos (Ferreira <i>et</i><i> al.</i>,  2006; Azev&ecirc;do <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007) permitem definir, com precis&atilde;o, as mudan&ccedil;as ambientais na interface fluvio-marinha. </p>       <p>A equipa de investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o seleccionou tr&ecirc;s  estu&aacute;rios com plan&iacute;cie aluvial, em regime mesomareal e com bacias de drenagem de dimens&atilde;o m&eacute;dia, mas com diferentes contextos geol&oacute;gicos (e neotect&oacute;nicos) e geomorfol&oacute;gicos e  condi&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas e de clima de agita&ccedil;&atilde;o marinha distintas. </p>       <p>O estu&aacute;rio do rio Neiva, mais setentrional, ilustra o ambiente de clima temperado chuvoso e de clima de  agita&ccedil;&atilde;o mar&iacute;tima atl&acirc;ntico de mais alta energia, cuja bacia hidrogr&aacute;fica se desenvolve nas rochas gran&iacute;ticas e metam&oacute;rficas paleoz&oacute;icas e com densa ocupa&ccedil;&atilde;o  humana desde a idade do Bronze. </p>       <p>O estu&aacute;rio do rio Alcabrichel, a NW de Lisboa, com ocupa&ccedil;&atilde;o humana desde o Paleol&iacute;tico, tem condi&ccedil;&otilde;es interm&eacute;dias no que respeita ao clima  e ao clima de agita&ccedil;&atilde;o mar&iacute;tima, e a sua bacia hidrogr&aacute;fica corta arenitos, margas e calc&aacute;rios do Mesoz&oacute;ico (Trindade, 2001). </p>       <p>O estu&aacute;rio da ribeira de Bensafrim situa-se  na costa algarvia, ao abrigo da influ&ecirc;ncia atl&acirc;ntica ocidental, tem um ambiente mediterr&acirc;nico, e a sua bacia entalha turbiditos paleoz&oacute;icos e arenitos mesoz&oacute;icos e cenoz&oacute;icos e, mais  raramente, calc&aacute;rios (Gomes, 2010). Na sua bacia hidrogr&aacute;fica s&atilde;o conhecidas importantes esta&ccedil;&otilde;es arqueol&oacute;gicas (Arruda <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2008), com ocupa&ccedil;&atilde;o desde o  Paleol&iacute;tico, bem como uma importante cidade romana e diversas <i>villas</i>. </p>       <p>Os tr&ecirc;s estu&aacute;rios em estudo s&atilde;o cont&iacute;guos a praias e campos dunares. </p>        ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><b>&nbsp;</b></p>      <p><b>IV. METODOLOGIA PROPOSTA </b></p>       <p>Para alcan&ccedil;ar os objectivos propostos, a equipa organizou a investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o em tr&ecirc;s grandes &aacute;reas tem&aacute;ticas, sintetizadas em seguida, e que se organizam em sete grandes tarefas  (<a href="#f1">fig. 1</a>). </p>       <p>&nbsp;</p> <a name="f1"></a>  <img src="/img/revistas/fin/n91/n91a06f1.jpg">     
<p>&nbsp;</p>      <p><b>1. A evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o milenar natural </b></p>       <p>Para avaliar esta evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o, a equipa est&aacute; a realizar diversas sondagens (com radar de Penetra&ccedil;&atilde;o  no solo) nos enchimentos sedimentares das plan&iacute;cies aluviais estuarinas. </p>       <p>A selec&ccedil;&atilde;o dos locais a sondar, em cada um dos estu&aacute;rios, est&aacute; a ser realizada de forma a obter as  varia&ccedil;&otilde;es laterais e longitudinais dos sedimentos. As plan&iacute;cies, bem como os locais das sondagens, s&atilde;o levantados e georreferenciados com equipamento de precis&atilde;o (GPS e/ esta&ccedil;&atilde;o  total), permitindo o seu enquadramento geomorfol&oacute;gico e a localiza&ccedil;&atilde;o precisa dos n&iacute;veis sedimentares encontrados, nomeadamente no que respeita &agrave; altimetria. </p>       <p>O tratamento sedimentol&oacute;gico das amostras obtidas por sondagem visa a caracteriza&ccedil;&atilde;o e avalia&ccedil;&atilde;o da varia&ccedil;&atilde;o de f&aacute;cies e textura, bem como a obten&ccedil;&atilde;o de v&aacute;rios  par&acirc;metros estat&iacute;sticos, com o prop&oacute;sito de detectar as mudan&ccedil;as energ&eacute;ticas no ambiente de deposi&ccedil;&atilde;o, assim como os epis&oacute;dios fluviais e marinhos. A morfoscopia e  exoscopia poder&atilde;o vir a revelar-se uma ajuda importante na defini&ccedil;&atilde;o dos agentes de transporte (marinhos ou fluviais), assim como o cortejo dos minerais pesados no reconhecimento das fontes aluvionares. </p>       <p>Para completar a investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o desta tem&aacute;tica, ser&atilde;o determinadas as componentes em is&oacute;topos ambientais (&#948;<sup>13</sup>C &#948;<sup>15</sup>n) dos sedimentos argilosos, com o objectivo de  identificar as fontes da mat&eacute;ria org&acirc;nica seja marinha ou terrestre (Burdloff <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2008). </p>       ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>Com a informa&ccedil;&atilde;o obtida e tendo em vista reconstituir a cripto-arquitectura das  sequ&ecirc;ncias sedimentares, ser&aacute; utilizado um radar de penetra&ccedil;&atilde;o no solo (GPr &#8211; Ground Penetrating radar), segundo as metodologias propostas por Backer e Jol (2007) e Jol (2009), utilizando </p>       <p>O equipamento e defini&ccedil;&otilde;es de aquisi&ccedil;&atilde;o de dados referidos por Gon&ccedil;alves <i>et</i><i> al.</i> (2008), cujos resultados ser&atilde;o localizados com precis&atilde;o atrav&eacute;s de GPs e  cruzados com os dados obtidos das sondagens. Esta investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o Ser&aacute; completada com a an&aacute;lise da microfauna, nomeadamente de foramin&iacute;feros e diatom&aacute;ceas, com o objectivo de detectar as  incurs&otilde;es marinhas. A identifica&ccedil;&atilde;o dos p&oacute;lens e dos palinom&oacute;rficos n&atilde;o pol&iacute;nicos (npp) nos sedimentos sondados complementar&aacute; a informa&ccedil;&atilde;o respeitante  &agrave;s condi&ccedil;&otilde;es clim&aacute;ticas e ambientais, naturais e induzidas pela ac&ccedil;&atilde;o humana. </p>       <p>A sequ&ecirc;ncia dos acontecimentos e varia&ccedil;&otilde;es ambientais detectadas ser&atilde;o  balizadas por data&ccedil;&otilde;es de radiocarbono (Soares, 2005, Soares e Dias, 2006, Soares e Martins, 2010), permitindo reconstituir a sequ&ecirc;ncia cronol&oacute;gica e estabelecer compara&ccedil;&otilde;es com dados  obtidos noutros sistemas morfogen&eacute;ticos. Este conjunto de tarefas compreende ainda a reconstru&ccedil;&atilde;o e modela&ccedil;&atilde;o em ambiente SIG da paleogeomorfologia dos estu&aacute;rios em estudo, nos  &uacute;ltimos 5000 anos. </p>       <p><b>2. A evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o natural e induzida pela ac&ccedil;&atilde;o humana </b></p>       <p>A evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o milenar comporta n&atilde;o s&oacute; uma evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o  natural, mas tamb&eacute;m as mudan&ccedil;as de uso do territ&oacute;rio. Com efeito, em Portugal, &eacute; a partir da idade do Bronze que a interven&ccedil;&atilde;o humana &eacute; mais marcada, tendo sido reconhecida em diversos  tipos de sedimentos, nomeadamente em consequ&ecirc;ncia da desfloresta&ccedil;&atilde;o. </p>       <p>A organiza&ccedil;&atilde;o da sociedade e dos grupos humanos, desde essa altura, tem vindo a aperfei&ccedil;oar os instrumentos  de interven&ccedil;&atilde;o no territ&oacute;rio, actuando de forma cada vez mais complexa sobre a paisagem. </p>       <p>A abordagem &agrave; Pr&eacute;-Hist&oacute;ria das tr&ecirc;s bacias de drenagem baseia-se nos dados  arqueol&oacute;gicos j&aacute; dispon&iacute;veis, que est&atilde;o a ser organizados numa base de dados, que inclui informa&ccedil;&otilde;es complementares dos v&aacute;rios s&iacute;tios arqueol&oacute;gicos, nomeadamente  posi&ccedil;&atilde;o, macrofauna, p&oacute;lens e datas de radiocarbono. </p>       <p>A pesquisa sobre os documentos hist&oacute;ricos regionais focar-se-&aacute; na detec&ccedil;&atilde;o de epis&oacute;dios chuvosos ou de cheias  e secas e tamb&eacute;m sobre mudan&ccedil;as de uso do territ&oacute;rio (nomeadamente desfloresta&ccedil;&atilde;o, secagem de p&acirc;ntanos e pauis). </p>       <p>No que se refere &agrave; evolu&ccedil;&atilde;o clim&aacute;tica  no &uacute;ltimo s&eacute;culo, ser&atilde;o usados dados radiom&eacute;tricos adequados a esta escala temporal (<sup>210</sup>Pb), os quais ser&atilde;o depois comparados com os dados da rede meteorol&oacute;gica nacional. </p>       <p>As modifica&ccedil;&otilde;es mais recentes (Rocha <i>et</i><i> al.</i>, 2007) ser&atilde;o avaliadas com base na cartografia nacional do coberto vegetal, do Projecto Corine e de ortofotomapas. </p>       ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><b>3. A integra&ccedil;&atilde;o dos eventos detectados no quadro das mudan&ccedil;as ambientais </b></p>       <p>Ao longo do Projecto ser&aacute; efectuada a revis&atilde;o, compara&ccedil;&atilde;o e correla&ccedil;&atilde;o com bases de  dados de paleoclimatologia (e.g. NOAA), de forma a avaliar em que medida as mudan&ccedil;as globais e regionais se reflectem ao longo do litoral ocidental da ib&eacute;ria nos &uacute;ltimos 5 000 anos. </p>       <p>A integra&ccedil;&atilde;o das data&ccedil;&otilde;es por radiocarbono, dos dados obtidos atrav&eacute;s dos is&oacute;topos est&aacute;veis, dos foramin&iacute;feros, dos p&oacute;lens e dos polim&oacute;rficos n&atilde;o  pol&iacute;nicos e dos dados arqueol&oacute;gicos com os resultados das an&aacute;lises sedimentol&oacute;gicas permitir&aacute; reconstituir as mudan&ccedil;as ambientais durante o Holoc&eacute;nico m&eacute;dio e superior, ao  longo do litoral portugu&ecirc;s. Esta tarefa n&atilde;o ficaria completa se os dados obtidos pela investiga&ccedil;&atilde;o desenvolvida n&atilde;o fossem comparados com os j&aacute; existentes noutros estu&aacute;rios e  lagunas costeiras. Conclui-se com a elabora&ccedil;&atilde;o de uma base de geodados, usando o mesmo m&eacute;todo de calibra&ccedil;&atilde;o do radiocarbono. </p>        <p><b>&nbsp;</b></p>      <p><b>V.
