Recentemente, esta limitação tem vindo a ser ultrapassada com recurso ao processamento em Sistemas de Informação Geográfica dos retratos sequenciais adquiridos por Deteção Remota. Neste cômputo, recorre-se ao arquivo Landsat para descortinar as (dis)similaridades do processo de urbanização (i.e., ritmo e modos) experienciado pelos municípios de Braga e de Guimarães entre 1984 e 2016. Os resultados demonstram que, mais do que temporal (Quando?) ou quantitativamente (Quanto?), o processo de urbanização nos dois municípios apresenta disparidades espaciais (Onde? e Como?). O Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) coloca em evidência que mais de 50% do crescimento urbano ocorre em contiguidade com o tecido preexistente. A colmatação urbana assume-se como o segundo modo mais importante em Braga, mas não em Guimarães, onde esta posição é ocupada pela dispersão. Por conseguinte, o perímetro urbano bracarense capta melhor o processo de urbanização do que o vimaranense. Dessarte, o LEI pode dar um contributo importante na compreensão da urbanização difusa, modelo territorial constantemente apelidado de banal, e que - por força de tal asserção - tem sido preterido em relação a outras áreas-problema.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Urban evolution, a primary question of Urban Geography, has always been limited by the lack of continuous spatial-temporal data. Recently, this limitation has been overcome by the processing in Geographic Information System of sequential snapshots acquired by Remote Sensing. Therefore, we use the Landsat archive to reveal the (dis)similarities of the urbanization process (rhythm and modes) experienced by the municipalities of Braga and Guimarães between 1984 and 2016. The results show that, more than temporal (When?) or quantitatively (How much?), the urbanization process in the two municipalities presents spatial disparities (Where? and How?). The Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) highlights that more than 50% of urban growth occurs in contiguity with the pre-existing fabric. Infilling constitutes the second most important mode in Braga, but not in Guimarães, where this position is occupied by outlying growth. Consequently, in Braga the urban perimeter captures better the urbanization process than in Guimarães. Thus, LEI can make an important contribution to the understanding of diffuse urbanization, a territorial model constantly called banal, and that - due to such an assertion - has been ignored in relation to other problem-areas.]]></p></abstract>

Récemment, le traitement en Système d&#8217;Information Géographique d&#8217;images séquentielles acquises par Télédétection a permis de dépasser cette limitation. Donc, nous utilisons l&#8217;archive Landsat pour révéler les (dis)similitudes du processus d&#8217;urbanisation (rythme et modes) expérimenté par les municipalités de Braga et Guimarães entre 1984 et 2016. Les résultats montrent que, plus que temporel (Quand?) ou quantitativement (Combien de?), le processus d&#8217;urbanisation dans les deux municipalités présente des disparités spatiales (Où? et Comment?). Le Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) souligne que plus de 50% de la croissance urbaine se produit en contigüité avec le tissu préexistant. Le remplissage constitue le deuxième mode plus important à Braga, mais ne pas à Guimarães, où cette position est occupée par la dispersion. Par conséquence, le périmètre urbain de Braga capture mieux le processus d&#8217;urbanisation que Guimarães. Ainsi, le LEI peut apporter une contribution importante sur la compréhension de l&#8217;urbanisation diffuse. Recientemente, el procesamiento en Sistemas de Información Geográfica de retratos secuenciales adquiridos por Teledetección ha permitido superar esta limitación. Por ello, se usa el archivo Landsat para revelar las (di)similitudes del proceso de urbanización (ej. ritmo y modos) experimentado por los municipios de Braga y Guimarães entre 1984 y 2016. Los resultados muestran que, más que temporal (¿Cuándo?) o cuantitativamente (¿Cuánto?), el proceso de urbanización en los dos municipios presenta disparidades espaciales (¿Dónde? y ¿Cómo?). El Landscape Expansion Index (LEI) evidencia que más del 50% del crecimiento urbano ocurre en contigüidad con el tejido preexistente. El relleno urbano es el segundo modo más importante en Braga, pero no en Guimarães, donde esta posición está ocupada por la dispersión. En consecuencia, el perímetro urbano de Braga captura mejor el proceso de urbanización que Guimarães.
