]]> Sumário. Quando da elaboração da 3ª Revisão do Inventário Florestal Nacional (DGF, 2001) foram desenvolvidas metodologias que permitiram definir parâmetros para caracterizar os povoamentos florestais quanto à sua biodiversidade. Assim, em cada parcela de amostragem foi avaliada a percentagem da composição de espécies, ou grupos de espécies, em sete classes de altura. A análise estatística dos dados (cluster analysis) pelo método do K-means, combinando a estrutura vertical com a composição, permitiu identificar na floresta portuguesa do continente dez grandes grupos, ou tipos florestais, e elaborar a Carta da Tipologia Florestal de Portugal Continental.

Map of Forest Types of the Portuguese Mainland
Abstract. In the last revision of the National Forest Inventory (DGF, 2001) variables were included describing the vertical structure and the composition of forests on the Portuguese mainland, in order to characterize their biodiversity. The forest vertical structure was assessed by the cover percentage of seven height classes and the composition of the different layers described using plant species, or groups of plant species, easily identifiable on the field. Therefore, it became possible, through cluster analysis, in particular K-means statistics, to identify ten main groups, or forest types, of Portuguese mainland, and to build a map with their geographical distribution.

]]> Résumé. Au cours de la dernière révision de l'Inventaire Forestier National (DGF, 2001), des données sur la structure verticale et la composition des peuplements forestiers ont été recueillies. Sur chaque parcelle d'échantillonnage ont été évalués le pourcentage de couverture de sept classes de hauteur et la composition des différentes strates formées par certaines essences, ou groupes d'essences, facilement identifiables sur le terrain. L'analyse statistique des données (cluster analysis), effectuée par la méthode K-means, a permis l'identification dans la forêt portugaise de dix groupes principaux, ou types de forêts, et l'élaboration d'une Carte des Types Forestiers du Portugal Continental.Mots clés:biodiversité; Inventaire Forestier National; composition; structure verticale; types de forêts
