O argumento central do trabalho é o de que as organizações têm procurado alterar o exercício do controlo, no sentido do aumento da flexibilidade. Para esse efeito, as formas tradicionais de controlo intrusivo têm vindo a ser substituídas por formas de controlo menos intrusivas. Para ilustrar esta mudança de foco na gestão do controlo, o texto começa por apresentar as diversas formas possíveis de controlo organizacional, após o que se centra na discussão de algumas tipologias importantes. Por fim, é discutida a questão do controlo nas organizações baseadas na confiança, sendo introduzido o conceito de rede mínima.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[This paper presents a general overview of organizational control. It argues that organizations have been changing the way they control their members by shifting from the control of flexibility to the flexibility of control. In order to do so, traditional forms of obtrusive control are being substituted by more inobtrusive controls. To illustrate these changes, the paper discusses possible alternatives of control, presents the major typologies of organizational control, and discusses the particular case of control in trust-based organizations, introducing the concept of the minimal network.]]></p></abstract>
