</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Leisure may contribute to help people to deal with stressful events, in many different ways through leisure involvement. The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristics of a Portuguese version of Leisure Coping Scales (LCS) and to contribute to a better understanding of leisure importance as a way to helping people to maintain good health under stressful conditions. The conceptual model of leisure stress coping developed by Iwasaki and Mannell (2000) consists of two dimensions and several subdimensions hierarchically structured. The leisure beliefs dimension is divided into self-determination disposition, leisure empowerment and leisure friendship, and the leisure strategies dimension is divided into leisure companionship, leisure palliative coping and mood enhancement for leisure. Results suggest that the Portuguese version of the Leisure Coping Scales (LCS) based on a sample of 253 undergraduate students presents reasonable psychometric properties. The correlation between leisure coping beliefs and leisure coping strategies with other psychological variables allowed the collection of useful information for a better understanding of leisure coping relationships.
</abstract>
