Quando essas imagens não são correctas nem favoráveis contribuem significativamente para o estigma e para a discriminação, ajudando a criar barreiras para o recovery das pessoas com doença mental (Wahl, 2003). Sendo o estigma um sério impedimento ao bem-estar das pessoas com doença mental (Corrigan & Kleinlein, 2005) é fundamental ter um olhar mais atento ao que é exposto, pelos media, ao público, nesta matéria. É também crucial atender às considerações sociais dos agentes de comunicação, ao nível da sua prática profissional, quanto a estas questões. Este estudo pretendeu conhecer todos esses aspectos tendo por base um grupo de profissionais de comunicação social, ao mesmo tempo que pretende clarificar ideias sobre a doença mental e aprofundar estratégias de redução do estigma, sustentadas por dimensões teóricas e perspectivadas por vários autores.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The images of psychiatric disorder that are presented to public audiences shape their attitudes and influence their behaviour. When those images are unfavourable and inaccurate, as they often are, they contribute to the stigma and discrimination that represent barriers to treatment and recovery (Wahl, 2003). Being stigma a real barrier to people with mental illness well-being (Corrigan & Kleinlein, 2005) it is necessary look more carefully in what is given people to know about mental illness. It is also crucial to attend the media professional’s social regards, at a practical level, concerning these issues. This study it intended to know all these aspects under the perspective of a media professionals group of one portuguese written press. For moreover, this study it equally intended to clarify ideas about mental illness and pointing out strategies to reduce stigma, supported by theoretical dimensions from some authors.]]></p></abstract>

Quando essas imagens    n&atilde;o s&atilde;o correctas nem favor&aacute;veis contribuem significativamente    para o estigma e para a discrimina&ccedil;&atilde;o, ajudando a criar barreiras    para o <I>recovery </I>das pessoas com doen&ccedil;a mental (Wahl, 2003). Sendo    o estigma um s&eacute;rio impedimento ao bem-estar das pessoas com doen&ccedil;a    mental (Corrigan &amp; Kleinlein, 2005) &eacute; fundamental ter um olhar mais    atento ao que &eacute; exposto, pelos media, ao p&uacute;blico, nesta mat&eacute;ria.    &Eacute; tamb&eacute;m crucial atender &agrave;s considera&ccedil;&otilde;es    sociais dos agentes de comunica&ccedil;&atilde;o, ao n&iacute;vel da sua pr&aacute;tica    profissional, quanto a estas quest&otilde;es.
