<self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0871-018X2023000500041&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0871-018X2023000500041&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0871-018X2023000500041&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Nowadays, 80.000 t of olive pomace is processed in one single extractor located on Northeastern Portugal, producing olive mill waste waters (OMWW) which are highly phytotoxic. The lack of management measures for this specific residue, arises the importance to understand how it may impact the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, eight sites along Tua River (Douro basin) and tributaries were seasonally monitored for a year (2021-2022), following standardized procedures defined by the Water Framework Directive. Moreover, sediments on three sites upstream and on the industrial discharge channel were characterized. To understand the toxicant role of OMWW, Daphnia magna and Unio delphinus were chosen as bioindicator organisms, and subjected to acute (24 hours) and chronic (14 days) exposures, respectively. When comparing the obtained results, sites located downstream of oil extraction industry showed a significant decrease on the water quality (higher values of oxygen demand and particularly of phenols) and aquatic habitats (anoxic sediments). Several ecological metrics and multivariate analyses detected the ecological impact of industrial discharges. Additionally, the conducted ecotoxicological assays revealed high toxicity for different trophic levels, causing the death, of at least 50% of the tested D. magna population, when exposed to 8.88 mg/L OMWW.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo Atualmente, 80.000 t de bagaço de azeitona são processadas numa única unidade extratora localizada na região de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, produzindo águas-ruças (OMWW) que são altamente fitotóxicas. A falta de medidas de gestão para este resíduo em específico, levanta a importância de compreender como este pode impactar a integridade ecológica dos ecossistemas aquáticos. Assim, oito locais espalhados pelo Rio Tua e tributários foram sazonalmente monitorizados durante um ano (2021-2022), segundo as normativas da Diretiva-Quadro da Água. Foram também caracterizados sedimentos de três locais a montante e no canal de descarga industrial. De forma a entender a potencial toxicidade das OMWW, os bioindicadores Daphnia magna e Unio delphinus foram sujeitos a exposições aguda (24 horas) e crónica (14 dias), respetivamente. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as áreas de estudo localizadas a jusante da unidade extratora, apresentam um significante decréscimo na qualidade da água (valores elevados para demanda de oxigénio e fenóis) e nos habitats aquáticos (sedimentos anóxicos). Diversas métricas ecológicas e análises multivariadas detetaram o impacto ecológico das descargas industriais. Os ensaios revelaram elevada toxicidade para diferentes níveis tróficos, de onde se destaca os 8,88 mg/L OMWW necessários para levar à morte de 50% da população de D. magna testada.]]></p></abstract>
