Galactose-&#945;-1,3-galactose (&#945;-gal) is an allergen present in non-primate mammals&#8217; meat, responsible for crossed reactions with cetuximab and gelatine.  Case description:  62-year-old male patient was sent to an Immunoallergology outpatient clinic for acetylsalicylic acid desensitization. He reported reproducible anaphylactic reactions beginning 3 hours after red meat ingestion. Currently, the patient strictly avoids red meat. The investigation confirmed sensitization to red meat and &#945;-gal.  Discussion/Conclusions:  &#945;-gal allergy presents some uncommon characteristics: the trigger (oligosaccharide), IgE-mediated reaction with late-onset, and the association with previous tick bites, responsible for primary sensitization. Patients must avoid red meat and tick bites and have an emergency plan with an adrenalin auto-injector.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO  Introdução:  A alergia a carne representa 3-15% da alergia alimentar na população pediátrica e 3% nos adultos. A galactose-&#945;-1,3-galactose (&#945;-gal) é um alergénio presente na carne de mamíferos não primatas responsável pela reatividade cruzada com cetuximab e gelatinas.  Descrição do caso:  Doente com 62 anos, sexo masculino, enviado à consulta de Imunoalergologia para dessensibilização ao ácido acetilsalicílico. Referiu reações anafiláticas reprodutíveis com início 3 horas após ingestão de carnes vermelhas. Atualmente cumpre evicção estrita de carnes vermelhas. A investigação confirmou sensibilização a carnes vermelhas e &#945;-gal.  Discussão/Conclusões:  A alergia a &#945;-gal apresenta algumas caraterísticas incomuns: o desencadeante (oligassacarídeo), reação IgE-mediada com início tardio e a associação a picadas de carraça prévias, responsáveis pela sensibilização inicial. Os doentes devem cumprir evicção de carnes vermelhas e picadas de carraça e ter um plano de emergência com autoinjetor de adrenalina.]]></p></abstract>
