O racional deste estudo baseou-se em que vários estudos prévios mostraram eficácia do tiotrópio em diversos parâmetros funcionais e clínicos, em doentes com DPOC, e nomeadamente na redução do declínio a um ano de tratamento (Anzueto 2005).
