Resumo: O constructo Qualidade de Vida (QDV) é frequentemente utilizado na literatura sobre Epilepsia. Para os profissionais que não trabalham na área da QDV as subtilezas do constructo podem impedir uma boa avaliação da QDV dos indivíduos adultos com epilepsia e/ou que a sua prática clínica seja guiada pelos resultados da investigação a esse nível. O objectivo do presente trabalho é sistematizar e discutir a literatura dos últimos cinco anos (1996-2000) sobre QDV e Epilepsia. A sistematização baseia-se nos resumos indexados nas bases de dados Medline e PsycINFO. De entre as 337 referências, foi efectuada uma análise aprofundada de 120 resumos (27 teóricos, 93 empíricos). Apresentam-se e discutem-se dificuldades e tendências actuais ao nível do estudo da QDV de indivíduos adultos com Epilepsia. A análise colocou questões ao nível dos dados estabelecidos, das propriedades dos instrumentos mais utilizados e do estado da arte em Portugal. Os resumos consultados não responderam a estas questões, o que será abordado na II parte deste trabalho.

Reviewing the literature on quality of life (QOL) assessment of epileptic adults, i difficulties in the subject' s approach
]]> Abstract: The construct Quality of Life (QOL) is frequently cited in the Epilepsy’s literature. For those professionals who do not work in the field of QOL the particularities of the construct may prevent a good assessment of the QOL of adults with Epilepsy and/or that their clinical practice be guided by the research done in this domain. The aim of the present work is to systematize and discuss the literature of the last five years (1996-2000) on QOL and Epilepsy. The systematization is based on the abstracts indexed in Medline and PsycINFO databases. Of the 337 references, a deep analysis was done on 120 abstracts (27 theoretical, 93 empirical). Current dificulties and tendencies in the study of epileptic adults’ QOL are presented and discussed. The analysis has raised questions regarding the established data, the proprieties of the more frequently used instruments and the domain’s state of the art in Portugal. The abstracts consulted do not answer these questions, which will be deal with in part II.Key words: Adults, Epilepsy, Literature review, Quality of life.
