Foram contactadas quatro mães de crianças com Paralisia Cerebral, com idades compreendidas entre um e três anos e cujo tempo de diagnóstico varia entre os onze meses e os três anos. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevista não-estruturada e analisados pelo método da Grounded Theory. A preocupação principal destas mães está relacionada com incerteza que envolve o futuro destas crianças. A maneira encontrada para fazer frente a esta preocupação é o investimento na reabilitação da criança, directamente influenciado pelas expectativas maternas e tendo como características a aprendizagem constante, a disponibilidade total, a exigência, a multifuncionalidade materna e a luta em prole da criança. Este processo social básico afecta grandemente toda a forma de viver destas mães e ilustra, de certa forma, a batalha materna interior entre a força e a depressão, entre os bons e os maus dias.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[The purpose of this study is to develop a theory about the maternal behavior of mothers of children with Cerebral Palsy. The participants have been four mothers of four children with Cerebral Palsy, aged one to three years old and whose diagnosis were made between eleven months and three years prior. Data were collected by means of non-structured interviews, and analyzed by the Grounded Theory method. The major concern of these mothers is related whit the uncertainty that surrounds the future of the child. The major concern of these mothers is related whit the uncertainty that surrounds the future of the child. The way founded to face this concern lays on the child's rehabilitation investment, witch is directly influenced by the maternal expectations, having as main features continuous learning, total availability, demand, multifunctional motherly and struggle on behalf of the child. This basic social process will grossly affect the way of living of these mothers and it shows the inner motherly struggle between strength and depression, between good and bad days.]]></p></abstract>
