Este artigo tem como objectivos (1) descrever procedimentos de reabilitação cognitiva com recurso à realidade virtual; (2) caracterizar um programa de intervenção em grupo de desenvolvimento de competências cognitivas e sociais, baseado no modelo da Integrated Psychological Therapy de Brenner; e (3) apresentar o impacto inicial da utilização destas metodologias em pessoas com esquizofrenia e desempregados de longa duração, integrados num programa de desenvolvimento pessoal. Este tipo de programas de desenvolvimento de competências, visa aumentar o nível de funcionamento geral e de qualidade de vida de pessoas em situação de exclusão social e dependem, em grande parte, das capacidades de aprendizagem e de generalização dos indivíduos e, consequentemente, das suas capacidades cognitivas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Schizophrenia is a psychopathological condition associated with cognitive dysfunctions, manifested in different neuropsychological dimensions (e.g., attention, mnesic functions, executive functions, processing speed). There is empirical evidence supporting the existence of a causality relation between the cognitive functioning and the functional skills of individuals. This paper purposes (1) to describe the cognitive rehabilitation procedures using virtual reality; (2) to characterize a cognitive and social skills development program (group intervention), based in Brenner’s Integrated Psychological Therapy; and (3) to report the initial impacts of these methodologies application in schizophrenic and long term unemployed persons integrated in a personal development program. This kind of Competencies Development Programs aim to promote people’s global functioning and their quality of life, which depend, in great measure, on the individuals learning and generalization capabilities, and consequently, on their cognitive skills.]]></p></abstract>
