A DAP potencia a morbi-mortalidade de outras patologias cardiovasculares e diminui significativamente a qualidade de vida. O exercício físico é considerado um dos tratamentos de primeira linha, por controlar os fatores de risco, ser eficaz no aumento da distância média percorrida sem dor, e por ser não invasivo, acessível e de baixo custo. Participaram neste estudo 40 pessoas com DAP e CI. Os participantes receberam uma prescrição de um programa de exercício físico (caminhadas) e uma sessão de mudança comportamental e motivacional. Nesta sessão foi utilizada uma estratégia qualitativa de mudança comportamental para identificar o que motiva as pessoas a iniciar o comportamento. Os objetivos reportados pelos participantes foram na sua maioria de conteúdo extrínseco associados à sua condição física e saúde. Os resultados enfatizam a utilidade e a eficácia de uma estratégia qualitativa coadjuvante aos instrumentos estandardizados de avaliação psicométrica, para conhecer os objetivos e os motivos das pessoas para aderirem a um novo comportamento. Embora o conteúdo seja fundamentalmente extrínseco, a verdade é que a maior parte dos nossos comportamentos são iniciados com base em motivações controladas e externas. O desafio reside na promoção da integração e internalização dos objetivos e motivos extrínsecos ao longo do processo de mudança comportamental.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a cardiovascular, chronic, and prevalent disease, in which the most disabling symptom is intermittent claudication (IC), i.e., the pain in lower limbs during walking, constant and reproducible. PAD also increases the risk of other non-fatal cardiovascular events, increases mortality, and significantly decreases quality of life. Physical exercise is considered one of the first-line treatments, as it controls risk factors, is effective in increasing the mean walking distance without pain, is non- invasive, accessible, and low-cost. Forty people with PAD and IC participated in this study. Participants received a prescription for an exercise program (walking), and a behavioral change and motivational session. In this session, a qualitative behavioral change strategy was used to identify what motivates people to initiate the behavior. The objectives reported by the participants were mostly of extrinsic nature, although associated with their physical condition and health. The results emphasize the usefulness of a qualitative strategy supporting the standardized psychometric assessment instruments, to understand people's objectives and motives to adhere to a new behavior. While the content is fundamentally extrinsic, the truth is that most of our behaviors are initiated based on controlled, external motivations. The challenge lies in promoting the integration and internalization of extrinsic objectives and motives throughout the behavioral change process.]]></p></abstract>
