Reading at school: A dialogue between teachers and students

The present work aims at researching Education and Human Development: school, citizenship and the labour market, to be submitted to Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, for a Master’s Degree. The central issue in the work deals with the following theme: What is the link between concept and teaching practices of Portuguese Language teachers concerning reading at primary level education, 5thto 8th series and how has their work contributed towards motivating students to develop reading habits? The empiric space in which field work was undertaken was a public school in Capim Grosso, a municipality located in the state of Bahia. The analysis presented along the corpus of the text, structured into four chapters, was build up on the basis of information yielded by teachers and students, during a sixty day period. In order to produce the reports conferred by teachers and students, which we refer to as “diários de aula” (class diaries), core aspects that were linked to the objectives explained in the beginning of the research were identified by this researcher. We concluded the research noting that students do not read because they are not stimulated to such practice and that the teacher has not yet become aware of his/her part as a mediator, in the sense of promoting teaching practices that will guide the students to feel pleasure regarding matters that are being taught them. Thus, and because we understand that reading functions as an act of creation capable of developing other creative acts, we appeal to the part teachers should play which, in this case, ought to be that of mediator between the student and knowledge, aiming at building a world that will guarantee social inclusion of our students in a societal and critical manner.
