</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract This essay aims to reflect briefly on the evolution of the international order since 1945 to the present day. In line with the academic literature on the subject, it begins with a theoretical definition of the concept of ‘international order’ in its two main components: polarity and legitimacy. It then looks at the period between 1945 and 2024 and tries to define the historical invariants that can characterise the three international orders corresponding to the three historical moments that shaped them: the bipolarity of the Cold War, the unipolarity of the post-Cold War period, and the complex, multi-level polarity of the second post-Cold War period, which characterises the changing international order today. The final argument is that the ongoing transition of the international order involves not only a new kind of polarity but also a crisis of legitimacy and the meaning of the international order itself.
</abstract>
