A amostra foi constituída de 34 gerontes, divididos em grupo experimental - GE (n=21, 76,48±2,12 anos) e grupo controle - GC (n=13, 75,69±2,26 anos). Para avaliação da autonomia funcional, foi utilizado o protocolo de avaliação funcional do GDLAM. A Pimáx foi aferida em aparelho próprio denominado Manovacuômetro (Analógico com intervalo operacional de -150 a +150 cmH2O; Critical Med/USA-2002). O protocolo de intervenção consistiu em carga de trabalho instalada gradualmente (50%-100%); sessões com duração de 20 minutos, com 7 séries de fortalecimento (2 minutos cada) e intervalo de 1 minuto entre as séries, durante 10 semanas, 3 vezes na semana. A análise de variância de medidas repetidas multivariada encontrou diferenças significativas entre as variáveis Pimáx, autonomia funcional (IG), caminhar 10m (C10m), levantar da posição sentada (LPS), vestir e tirar a camisa (VTC), levantar da posição decúbito ventral (LPDV) e levantar e caminhar por locais da casa (LCLC) apresentadas pelos GC e GE, sendo este último superior ao primeiro (p=0,00000). Desta forma, pôde-se concluir que o fortalecimento isolado da musculatura inspiratória causou aumento da Pimáx e da autonomia funcional dos idosos asilados analisados.]]></p></abstract>

The method created by The Latin-American Development Group for Elderly (GDLAM) was used to evaluate functional autonomy through successive tests. The Pimáx was calibrated in a Manovacuometer device (analogical with interval operational of 150 the +150 cmH2O; Critical Med / USA -2002). The registry of intervention consisting in : working load installed bit-by-bit (50%-100%); sessions with duration of 20 minutes , with 7 sets of training (2 minutes each) and interval of 1 minute among the sets, for 10 weeks , 3 times a week. The multivariate analysis of variance showed significant improvements (p=0,00000) in Pimáx and the tests that were used to assess functional autonomy. In this way, it was concluded that the strengthening inspiratory muscles improves Pimáx and functional autonomy of the sheltered elderly people analyzed.]]></p></abstract>
