A grande maioria pretendia utilizar algum método contracetivo no pós-parto, valorizando a eficácia e a segurança.
</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Overview and Aims: Contraceptive counselling in the postpartum period is of particular importance and should be tailored to the individual expectations and needs of each woman. The main objective of this study was to characterize a sample of post-partum women and to understand their contraceptive needs and preferences. As a secondary objective, the study aimed to assess the factors associated with the choice of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in the postpartum period. Study Design, Population and Methods: Cross-sectional study, carried out through a questionnaire distributed to puerperal women hospitalized in two Portuguese hospitals. Results: Among the 241 women included, 79.2% had already used a contraceptive method in the past, with the combined pill being the most frequent method. About 41,9% had an unplanned pregnancy, of which 47,5% were using a contraceptive method at the time they became pregnant. The vast majority intended to use some contraceptive method in the postpartum period, valuing efficacy and safety. The intention to use LARC in the postpartum period was influenced by age and previous use of these methods. Physicians and other health professionals were considered the preferential source of information. Conclusions: Most women intended to use contraception in the postpartum period, however they considered themselves uninformed on the subject. About the LARC, there has been observed misinformation about its efficacy, safety and post-partum effects. Strategies to improve the counseling effectiveness, as well as the accessibility of contraceptive methods in the postpartum period must be developed.
</abstract>
