Gynaecological organs are more commonly involved, but all other organs and structures within the pelvis have to be considered in a rational imaging approach to female pelvic tumours. The first step is to identify the normal anatomy and recognize the peritoneal folds and recesses. The patterns of displacement should then be evaluated in order to determine if the tumour is intra or extra-peritoneal. After these initial steps, the radiologist should look for organ- specific signs that may be particularly useful tumours originated in the ovary, tubes and uterus. The authors aim to review the main radiological signs available for determining the origin of female pelvic masses and to develop a rational algorithm to identify the place of origin of undetermined tumours on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo A origem de tumores pélvicos de grandes dimensões no sexo feminino pode ser difícil de determinar. Os órgãos ginecológicos são mais frequentemente envolvidos, mas outros órgãos e estruturas devem ser considerados. O primeiro passo deve ser identificar a anatomia normal de cada órgão e reconhecer as pregas e os recessos peritoneais. Os padrões de desvio devem ser também conhecidos, com vista a determinar a origem intra ou extra- peritoneal dos tumores. Depois destes passos iniciais, o radiologista deve atentar em sinais específicos de órgão, particularmente úteis em tumores originados no ovário, trompas e útero. Este artigo pretende rever os principais sinais radiológicos que permitem determinar a origem dos tumores pélvicos no sexo feminino e desenvolver um algoritmo racional na sua abordagem por tomografia computorizada (TC) e ressonância magnética (RM).]]></p></abstract>
