</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
ABSTRACT The unsustainability of agri-food systems has led to the depletion of our planet's resources. The European Green Deal, proposed by the European Commission, together with the Farm to Fork Strategy, have already set targets for ecological transition. In line with these proposals, there are projects in the food industry for ecolabelling schemes that aim to communicate sustainability to the consumer society and contribute to the awareness of the environmental impact of products on the market. This study addresses a relevant and current issue: it aims to evaluate two recent and promising environmental labelling systems - Eco-Score and Planet Score - and to study their viability and applicability in the food industry, taking into account the methodologies used, the challenges of their implementation and their influence on consumers’ choices. Following a review of European legislative proposals, documents and government statements on sustainability on the European Commission's website, a careful analysis of the two labelling systems and methodologies for assessing environmental performance (Life Cycle Assessment, PEF method and databases) was carried out, through direct consultation of information on the official websites of these labelling systems, as well as through reports, documents and articles published by bodies and specialists dealing with the sustainability of food systems. The relationship between ecolabelling and consumer choices was also assessed. Despite the limitations, both in terms of legal disharmony and in terms of the scientific rigour of the methodologies for calculating environmental impact, which are still subject to revision and improvement, the scenario of transition to a greener world, through the creation of these labelling systems, appears to be quite optimistic.
</abstract>
