</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
ABSTRACT Scientific evidence shows that inadequate feeding practices during the first two years of life have negative effects on nutritional status and impair proper development and health throughout the life course. Food insecurity is one of the main causes of undernutrition. Southern Angola experiences significant levels of food insecurity, making it relevant to characterise the food and nutrition situation of children in the region. A narrative review was conducted to analyse the evolution of the food and nutrition situation of children under the age of five in southern Angola, specifically in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla, and Namibe. The best available evidence from the past 15 years was reviewed, based on population survey reports conducted by Angolan public entities and organisations active in the region. In southern Angola, the prevalence rates of global acute malnutrition, global chronic malnutrition (stunting), and underweight appear to be increasing, with the exception of global acute malnutrition in Cunene. Data from 2021 showed a global acute malnutrition prevalence of 9.0%, exceeding internationally defined targets of < 5%. Chronic malnutrition in the region is classified as "very high", with a prevalence of 47.1%, being more pronounced in Huíla and Cunene. The region also presents high rates of underweight (28.5%). Conversely, the prevalence of overweight remains low (1.1%), and exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age appears to be improving across the region. Despite the limited information available on individual dietary intake, household-level data indicate a reduction in dietary diversity and meal frequency among children aged 6 to 23 months. In conclusion, the findings highlight the need for regular monitoring of the food and nutrition situation of children under five in the region. It is recommended to strengthen monitoring strategies for nutritional status and infant feeding practices, and to enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals in the field of nutrition, with a view to developing programmes aimed at mitigating the current situation, improving nutritional and health outcomes, and reducing child mortality.
</abstract>
