Nos países desenvolvidos, o Desperdício Alimentar ocorre sobretudo na fase de consumo, tendo as cantinas escolares um grande contributo para este problema, tornando-se por isso, necessário compreender as suas causas.  OBJETIVOS:  Este estudo pretende avaliar a perceção dos alunos em relação ao Desperdício Alimentar e sua satisfação com o serviço de alimentação de uma escola básica do distrito de Viana do Castelo.  METODOLOGIA:  Recolha de dados relativos ao Desperdício Alimentar da refeição do almoço de uma escola do 2.º e 3.º ciclos do ensino básico do distrito de Viana do Castelo, pelo método físico de pesagem agregada não seletiva durante 5 dias interpolados. Aplicação de questionário de autopreenchimento a todos os alunos, com idades compreendidas entre os 10 e os 14 anos a frequentar o estabelecimento de educação e ensino.  RESULTADOS:  Verificou-se um Desperdício Alimentar de 41%, sendo a contribuição dos restos de 62%, comparativamente às sobras. Ao questionário responderam 82% do total de alunos, maioritariamente pertencentes ao sexo feminino (54%) e 3.º ciclo (58%). Almoçam na cantina, &#8220;em alguns dias durante a semana&#8221;, 64%, existindo, no entanto, grande proporção de alunos a almoçar noutros locais (36%), nomeadamente no bufete (56%), e preferencialmente sandes (36%). Apresentam como principais motivos na escolha da cantina para almoçar, a funcionalidade (&#8220;dá jeito&#8221;; 50%) e a socialização (&#8220;estar com os amigos&#8221;; 40%); na avaliação da refeição escolar 32% refere gostar da comida servida versus 21% que refere não gostar; relativamente à perceção do Desperdício Alimentar gerado, 44% refere nunca ou raramente desperdiçar comida.  CONCLUSÕES:  32% dos alunos refere gostar da comida, havendo ainda outros aspetos positivos destacados (apresentação agradável, comida saborosa) que contribuem para a satisfação com a refeição escolar. 44% dos alunos refere nunca ou raramente desperdiçar, o que não corresponde ao Desperdício Alimentar gerado, justificando a implementação de estratégias de consciencialização de combate ao Desperdício Alimentar.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  INTRODUCTION:  Food Waste is a consequence of today's consumer society, which shows a huge gap between the abundance of food in certain countries and the scarcity in others. In developed countries, Food Waste occurs mainly at the consumption stage, with school canteens making a major contribution to this problem, making it necessary to understand the causes.  OBJECTIVES:  This study aims to assess students' perceptions of Food Waste and their satisfaction with the food service at an elementary school in the district of Viana do Castelo.  METHODOLOGY:  Data on Food Waste at lunchtime in an elementary school in the district of Viana do Castelo was collected using the physical method of non-selective aggregate weighing over 5 interpolated days. A self-reported questionnaire was applied to all students attending the school.  RESULTS:  There was 41% Food Waste, and the contribution of leftovers was 62%. The questionnaire was answered by 82% of the total number of students, most of whom were female (54%) and in the 3rd cycle (58%). 64% eat lunch in the canteen &#8220;some days during the week&#8221;, although a large proportion of students eat lunch elsewhere (36%), namely in the buffet (56%), and preferably sandwiches (36%). The main reasons for choosing the canteen for lunch are functionality (&#8220;it's handy&#8221;; 50%) and socializing (&#8220;to be with friends&#8221;; 40%); when it comes to evaluating the school meal, 32% said they liked the food served, compared to 21% who did not. Regarding the perception of food waste generated, 44% said they never or rarely wasted food.  CONCLUSIONS:  32% of students report liking the food, also indicating other positive aspects (nice presentation, tasty food) that contribute to satisfaction with the school meal. 44% of students report never or rarely wasting, which does not correspond to the Food Waste generated, justifying the implementation of strategies to raise awareness and combat Food Waste.]]></p></abstract>
