<self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2183-84532023000100204&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2183-84532023000100204&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.pt/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2183-84532023000100204&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO  Introdução: A COVID-19, doença causada pelo novo coronavírus- síndrome respiratória aguda-grave 2, foi identificada pela primeira vez na China, em dezembro de 2019. A doença foi reconhecida pela Organização Mundial de Saúde como pandemia, no dia 11 de março de 2020. Este trabalho caracteriza os casos confirmados num Hospital Central, contribuindo para a criação de medidas de prevenção mais eficientes.  Metodologia: Foi realizado um estudo observacional, incluindo todos os profissionais de saúde de um Hospital Central que constituíram casos confirmados para COVID-19, entre o dia 2 de março e 31 de dezembro de 2020. Os dados obtidos foram tratados e analisados com o programa informático Microsoft Excel.  Resultados: Contabilizaram-se 723 profissionais infetados. Observou-se um pico de casos no mês de março e outro em dezembro. Os casos foram mais frequentes no género feminino (76%) e em profissionais até aos 45 anos. A categoria de enfermagem foi a mais atingida em termos absolutos e relativos. Os serviços de medicina interna, serviço de urgência, infeciologia e cirurgia registaram o maior número de infeções. A maioria dos casos apresentava-se sintomático à data do diagnóstico. Do total da amostra, cinco profissionais tiveram necessidade de internamento, sendo que um acabou por falecer.  Discussão dos resultados e conclusões: A frequência de casos de COVID-19 entre os profissionais de saúde parece ser, com base neste estudo, bastante superior à população em geral. Face aos dados obtidos, poderá existir benefício na implementação de protocolos que incluam testagem periódica dos profissionais de saúde sobretudo em serviços de maior risco de infeção e/ou de maior vulnerabilidade dos doentes, permitindo o controlo dos casos assintomáticos e, desta forma, quebrar possíveis cadeias de transmissão.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: In December 2019, COVID-19, disease caused by the new coronavirus- severe acute respiratory syndrome 2, was reported for the first time in China. In Portugal, the first two cases were flagged on 2nd of March 2020. On the 11nd of March, World Health Organization declared the disease as a global pandemic. This study outlines the COVID-19 confirmed cases, contributing for the establishment of more efficient prevention measures.  Methods: An observational study including all health professionals from a Central Hospital with a positive case between the 2nd of March 2020 and the 31st of December 2020 was carried out. The data obtained was processed and analyzed using the Microsoft Excel software.  Results: 723 professionals were infected and a peak of cases was verified in March and December. The frequency on cases was higher in females (76%) and professionals up to 45 years old. The highest number of cases occurred amongst nurses and the most affected medical departments were internal medicine, emergency, infectious diseases and surgery. The majority of cases were symptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Out of the full sample, five professionals required hospitalization and one of which died.  Discussion and conclusions: Accordingly to this study, the frequency of COVID-19 cases amongst health professionals seems to be considerably higher than the general population. The results seem to suggest that the implementation of period testing protocols over health professionals, above all in services with higher risk of infection or/and more vulnerable patients, might be beneficial, whilst contributing for the control of asymptomatic cases and hence breaking potential transmission chains.]]></p></abstract>
