</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
ABSTRACT Introduction: Occupational toxic hepatitis is an underdiagnosed condition resulting from exposure to hepatotoxic chemical agents in the workplace. The diagnosis is challenging and requires a detailed occupational history, exclusion of other causes, and a connection between chemical exposure and liver injury. Case report: This article describes the case of a 37-year-old woman, a seamstress in an automotive upholstery industry, who presented elevated hepatic transaminases during a periodic occupational health examination. After excluding other causes and performing a liver biopsy, she was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis of toxic etiology. A cyclical pattern of worsening liver enzymes was observed during work periods and improvement during absences from work, which allowed for the establishment of a causal link and classification as an occupational disease. The initially implemented preventive measures, including the use of gloves and adaptations to the workstation, did not prevent the progression of the disease. Only after transferring to a sector without chemical exposure was there a normalization of altered hepatic parameters. Discussion/Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of detailed occupational history and continuous monitoring of workers exposed to chemical risks. Furthermore, it underscores the need for effective preventive measures and collaboration among occupational health physicians, employers, and workers to ensure safe working environments and prevent insidious diseases such as occupational toxic hepatitis.
</abstract>
