O trabalho por turnos causa disrupção do ciclo circadiano, com alterações metabólicas e hormonais e tem vindo a ser associado a aumento do risco de excesso de peso/obesidade. O presente estudo pretendeu determinar a prevalência de excesso de peso e obesidade entre trabalhadores por turnos e avaliar se esta se relaciona com a tipologia de trabalho por turnos.  Material e métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal, com componente analítica, numa empresa de produção de estofos de automóveis da região norte de Portugal. A recolha dos dados foi efetuada durante o mês de janeiro de 2024, através do autopreenchimento de questionário elaborado para o efeito, pelos trabalhadores da empresa que aceitaram participar no estudo. Considerou-se excesso de peso e obesidade quando o índice de massa corporal foi igual ou superior a 25 kg/m2 ou 30 kg/m2, respetivamente. A análise estatística foi efetuada com recurso ao programa SPSS versão 28.0.1.  Resultados e discussão: A prevalência de excesso de peso e de obesidade foi de 60.7% e 4.5%, respetivamente no turno diurno manhã; 65.3% e 6.9% no turno diurno tarde; 50.7% e 13.4% no turno noturno. Não se observou associação significativa entre o Índice de Massa Corporal e a tipologia de turno. Embora pioneiro em Portugal, com prevalências de excesso de peso e obesidade superiores às descritas na literatura, os resultados poderão ter sido limitados pela metodologia do presente estudo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: Overweight and obesity are a major health problem that is associated with other pathologies, health costs and work-related consequences. Shift work disrupts the circadian cycle, causing metabolic and hormonal changes, and has been associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among shift workers and to assess whether this is related to the type of shift work.  Material and methods: A cross-sectional study with an analytical component was carried out in a car upholstery production company in the northern region of Portugal. Data was collected during the month of January 2024 by self-completion of a questionnaire designed for this purpose by the company's workers who agreed to take part in the study. Overweight and obesity were considered when the body mass index was equal to or greater than 25 kg/m2 or 30 kg/m2, respectively. Statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS program version 28.0.1.  Results and discussion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 60.7% and 4.5% respectively for the morning shift; 65.3% and 6.9% for the afternoon shift; 50.7% and 13.4% for the night shift. There was no significant association between Body Mass Index and shift type. Although this is a pioneering study in Portugal, with prevalences of overweight and obesity higher than those described in the literature, the results may have been limited by the methodology of this study.]]></p></abstract>
