Esta foi classificada pela International Agency for Research on Cancer como um agente carcinogéneo para os seres humanos. Não obstante, até à data, não foram estabelecidos métodos adequados para estimar a exposição a longo prazo a este agente físico, não tendo sido definido nenhum valor limite de exposição. Sabe-se, no entanto, que contribui para o aparecimento de 65-90% dos cancros de pele, com impacto particular na incidência dos carcinomas espinocelulares pela exposição cumulativa, muitas vezes decorrente da atividade ocupacional. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em identificar, numa amostra de pacientes com o diagnóstico anatomopatológico desta patologia, seguidos em consulta de Dermatologia, quais as suas atividades profissionais, caraterizar a exposição solar ocupacional e aferir a sua relação com a doença.  Métodos Integraram este estudo 105 pacientes com este diagnóstico anatomopatológico em 2022 e que foram seguidos em consulta de Dermatologia num hospital central de Portugal. A colheita de dados realizou-se através da consulta de processos clínicos e entrevistas orientadas por questionário, presenciais, em contexto de consulta, assim como telefonicamente, para o esclarecimento de informações adicionais. Foi efetuada análise estatística descritiva e aplicaram-se os testes estatísticos: &#935;2, Teste exato de Fisher, tstudent e Regressão logística.  Resultados A média de idades da amostra é de 81 anos. 89 (85%) indivíduos apresentam fototipo 1 e 2. Cerca de 68% dos participantes referem ter tido exposição solar ocupacional significativa. Entre as atividades profissionais mais expostas, destacam-se, a agricultura (n=24; 23%), construção civil (n=18; 17%), condução de veículos (n=12; 11%) bem como limpeza e trabalhos domésticos (n=7; 7%). A média de idades ao diagnóstico é de 79 anos. Por cada ano de exposição ocupacional a radiação UV, o risco aumentou em 1,18 vezes (IC 95% 1.102-1,272).  Discussão/Conclusão Do nosso conhecimento, este é o único estudo português que avaliou, para uma amostra de população portuguesa, o impacto da exposição a radiação ultravioleta ocupacional no aparecimento de Carcinomas Espinocelulares. Evidenciou, assim, a necessidade de maior investimento em medidas de promoção da saúde e de prevenção, coletivas: como a evicção do trabalho ao sol em horas de maior intensidade, a realização de pausas laborais, o trabalho sob sombras, assim como individuais: uso de equipamento de proteção individual, como óculos de sol, chapéus de aba larga, roupa adequada, além do uso de protetor solar.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction/Objectives More than 500 million people work outdoors with significant exposure to solar radiation, particularly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified UV radiation as a carcinogenic agent for humans. However, to date, no adequate methods have been established to estimate long-term exposure to this physical agent, nor has any exposure limit value been defined. It is known, however, that UV radiation contributes to 65-90% of skin cancers, with a particular impact on the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma due to cumulative exposure, often resulting from occupational activities. The aim of this study is to identify the professional activities of a sample of patients diagnosed with this pathology and followed up in a Dermatology consultation, characterize their occupational sun exposure, and assess its relationship with the disease.  Methods This study included 105 patients with a histopathological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in 2022 who were followed up in a Dermatology consultation at a central hospital in Portugal. Data collection was carried out through a review of medical records and structured questionnaire-based interviews, conducted in person during consultations, as well as by telephone for clarification of additional information. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, and the following statistical tests were applied: &#935;2, Fisher&#8217;s exact test, Student&#8217;s t-test, and logistic regression.  Results The mean age of the sample was 81 years. A total of 89 (85%) individuals had phototype I or II. Around 68% of participants reported having significant occupational sun exposure. The most exposed professional activities included agriculture (n=24; 23%), construction (n=18; 17%), vehicle driving (n=12; 11%), and cleaning/domestic work (n=7; 7%). The mean age at diagnosis was 79 years. For each additional year of occupational UV radiation exposure, the risk increased by 1.18 times (95% CI 1.102-1.272).  Discussion/Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the only Portuguese study that has evaluated, in a sample of the Portuguese population, the impact of occupational Ultraviolet radiation exposure on the development of squamous cell carcinoma. The findings highlight the need for greater investment in health promotion and prevention measures, including collective strategies such as avoiding work in direct sunlight during peak hours, implementing work breaks, and working in shaded areas. Additionally, individual protective measures should be encouraged, including the use of personal protective equipment such as sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, appropriate clothing, and sunscreen.]]></p></abstract>
