We provided an evaluation of such impact in a tertiary hospital in Portugal.  Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of the patients admitted for surgical treatment due to acute orthopedic trauma from March to December of 2019 and March to December of 2020.  Results: A total of 794 patients in 2019 and 728 in 2020 were included. Although the mean time to surgery was shorter the hospital stay was longer in 2020. Infected patients had a longer hospital stay and longer time until surgery compared to non-infected. There was no significant difference between the mortality and need for treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) in both years. There was a significant increase in the number of polytrauma patients treated in our institution in 2020 compared to 2019.  Conclusion: Orthopedic trauma surgery was globally influenced by the pandemic. Safe and effective measures should be adopted in the treatment of trauma patients, to reduce the clinical and economic impact.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo  Introdução: O impacto da pandemia COVID-19 no tratamento cirúrgico da patologia ortopédica traumática não está claramente caracterizado na literatura. Procuramos neste estudo avaliar este impacto num hospital terciário em Portugal.  Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo dos doentes admitidos para tratamento cirúrgico de patologia traumática aguda entre março e dezembro de 2019 e entre março e dezembro de 2020.  Resultados: O estudo incluiu um total de 794 doentes em 2019 e 728 em 2020. O tempo médio até cirurgia foi menor em 2020 e a duração do internamento foi superior. Em 2020, os doentes COVID-positivos tiveram internamentos mais longos e maiores tempos até à cirurgia. Não se verificou diferença na mortalidade e na necessidade de cuidados intensivos. No ano 2020 existiu um aumento significativo de politraumatizados tratados na nossa instituição comparativamente com o ano de 2019.  Conclusão: A cirurgia ortopédica traumática foi globalmente influenciada pela pandemia. Devem ser adotadas medidas contingentes, seguras e eficazes no tratamento dos doentes vítimas de trauma, de forma a reduzir o seu impacto clínico e económico.]]></p></abstract>
