O objetivo desta revisão foi avaliar a evidência disponível acerca da eficácia do hipurato de metenamina como alternativa à antibioterapia na profilaxia das ITUs recorrentes.  Métodos: As fontes de dados consultadas foram The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE/PubMed, DARE, TRIP Medical Database, Canadian Medical Association Practice Guidelines Infobase e National Guideline Clearinghouse. Foi realizada a pesquisa de meta-análises, ensaios clínicos controlados e aleatorizados, estudos observacionais e guidelines escritos em inglês ou português, publicados entre janeiro de 2012 e maio de 2022, tendo sido utilizados os termos MeSH &#8220;methenamine&#8221; e &#8220;urinary tract infections&#8221;. O nível de evidência e a força de recomendação foram avaliados com base na escala Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) da American Family Physician.  Resultados: Dos 106 resultados obtidos inicialmente, foram selecionados 3 artigos, 2 ensaios clínicos controlados e aleatorizados e 1 estudo observacional retrospetivo. A evidência encontrada nestes estudos revelou que o hipurato de metenamina é equiparável à antibioterapia profilática na prevenção das ITUs recorrentes.  Conclusão: Esta revisão permite concluir que o hipurato de metenamina poderá surgir assim como uma possível alternativa viável e segura à antibioterapia profilática demonstrando não ser inferior a esta (SORT B), tendo a vantagem clara de não contribuir para a problemática crescente que é a resistência antibiótica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction: Antibiotic prophylaxis is used to prevent the recurrence of urinary tract infections (UTIs), however, the growing problematic of antibiotic resistance over the last few years has led to the search for a viable alternative to antibiotics. The main goal of this review was to evaluate the evidence available regarding the effectiveness of methenamine hippurate as an alternative to antibiotic therapy in the prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs.  Methods: the data sources were The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE/PubMed, DARE, TRIP Medical Database, Canadian Medical Association Practice Guidelines Infobase and National Guideline Clearinghouse. Research of meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, observational studies and guidelines written in English or Portuguese published between January 2012 and May 2022, using the MeSH terms &#8220;methenamine&#8221; and &#8220;urinary tract infections&#8221;. The level of evidence and strength of recommendation were assessed by applying the American Family Physician's Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) scale.  Results: Of the 106 results obtained initially, 2 randomized controlled clinical trials and 1 retrospective observational study were selected. The evidence found in these studies revealed that methenamine hippurate is comparable to antibiotic prophylaxis in preventing recurrent UTIs.  Conclusion: This review allows us to conclude that methenamine hippurate appears as a possible, viable and safe alternative to antibiotic prophylaxis, demonstrating its non-inferiority (SORT B), having the clear advantage of not contributing to the growing problem that is antibiotic resistance.]]></p></abstract>
