Estas patologias são frequentemente negligenciadas, não sendo avaliadas rotineiramente na medicina desportiva.  Objetivos:  O objetivo deste estudo é o de determinar a incidência dos sintomas nasais/respiratórios e alérgicos tanto em atletas em idade pediátrica, como na população não ativa, mostrando a importância da combinação dos questionários Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA) e Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) no rastreio destes doentes.  Material e Métodos:  Foi realizado um estudo transversal com recurso a um questionário on-line de auto-preenchimento por jovens entre os 12 e 18 anos. Os participantes foram recrutados durante os meses de novembro e dezembro de 2023. Tanto atletas como controlos não ativos preencheram um inquérito composto pelos questionários AQUA e NOSE. Das 436 respostas recebidas, 407 foram consideradas completas e incluídas neste estudo (290 atletas e 117 controlos não ativos).  Resultados:  A coorte de atletas consistiu predominantemente de indivíduos do sexo masculino (63.1%, n = 183) com idade média de 15.2 ± 1.7 anos. Ambos os grupos coincidem em termos de distribuição por idade e sexo. A maioria dos atletas eram jogadores de rugby (37.9%, n = 110), seguidos de jogadores de futebol (12.8%, n = 37) e praticantes de ballet (10.3%, n = 30). Infeções das vias aéreas superiores (IVAS) de repetição foram relatadas em 71 atletas (24.5%), por comparação com 14 controlos não ativos (12.0%), o que representa um aumento significativo na incidência de IVAS em atletas (p = 0.0049). Mais de 45% dos atletas faltaram ao treino pelo menos uma vez por ano devido a IVAS e 14.5% faltaram ao treino mais de 3 vezes no ano passado por este motivo. No que diz respeito à sintomatologia, não existiu uma diferença significativa (p = 0.1589) no número de atletas que relataram sintomas nasais (32.8%, n = 95) por comparação com não atletas (25.7%, n = 30); porém, os atletas apresentam pontuações significativamente mais elevadas no questionário NOSE (p = 0.0001). Noventa e cinco atletas (32.8%) referem apresentar pelo menos uma doença alérgica com diagnóstico médico, por oposição a 35 jovens não ativos (29.9%), sem diferenças significativas entre os grupos (p = 0.5776), mesmo no que diz respeito à prevalência de asma (p = 0.4446) ou rinite (p = 0.4390).  Conclusões:  O rastreio de doenças alérgicas e respiratórias com os questionários AQUA e NOSE deve ser realizado por rotina em jovens atletas, já que estas patologias têm repercussão quer na frequência aos treinos, como na qualidade de vida.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction:  Respiratory diseases and allergic sensitization have a known impact on the daily lives of athletes. These pathologies are often neglected and are not routinely evaluated in sports medicine.  Objectives:  The objective of this study is to determine the incidence of nasal/respiratory and allergic symptoms in both pediatric athletes and the non-active population, showing the importance of combining the Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA) and Nasal Obstruction Symptom questionnaires. Evaluation (NOSE) in screening these patients.  Material and Methods:  A cross-sectional study was carried out using an online self-completed questionnaire by young people between 12 and 18 years old. Participants were recruited during the months of November and December 2023. Both athletes and non-active controls completed a survey consisting of the AQUA and NOSE questionnaires. Of the 436 responses received, 407 were considered complete and included in this study (290 athletes and 117 non-active controls).  Results:  The athlete cohort consisted predominantly of male individuals (63.1%, n = 183) with a mean age of 15.2 ± 1.7 years. Both groups coincide in terms of distribution by age and sex. The majority of athletes were rugby players (37.9%, n = 110), followed by football players (12.8%, n = 37) and ballet dancers (10.3%, n = 30). Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) were reported in 71 athletes (24.5%), compared to 14 non-active controls (12.0%), representing a significant increase in the incidence of URTIs in athletes (p = 0.0049). More than 45% of athletes missed training at least once a year due to URTI and 14.5% missed training more than 3 times last year for this reason. With regard to symptoms, there was no significant difference (p = 0.1589) in the number of athletes who reported nasal symptoms (32.8%, n = 95) compared to non-athletes (25.7%, n = 30); however, athletes have significantly higher scores on the NOSE questionnaire (p = 0.0001). Ninety-five athletes (32.8%) report having at least one medically diagnosed allergic disease, as opposed to 35 non-active controls (29.9%), with no significant differences between the groups (p = 0.5776), even with regard to prevalence of asthma (p = 0.4446) or rhinitis (p = 0.4390).  Conclusions:  Screening for allergic and respiratory diseases with the AQUA and NOSE questionnaires should be carried out routinely in young athletes, as these pathologies have an impact on both training attendance and quality of life.]]></p></abstract>
