This article critically analyzes the relationship between the evolution of Portuguese political science and the trajectory of democracy that began with the April 25 revolution. It argues that, despite its consolidation and internationalization, the origins of the discipline continue to be an asset, especially in dialogue with other areas and in the centrality of the Portuguese case. The text also discusses current challenges, such as the quantitative predominance that limits theoretical innovation, and proposes ways to preserve the disciplinary identity while promoting greater international and interdisciplinary dialogue.
