Abstract

ALCOFORADO, Maria João  and  ALEGRIA, Maria Fernanda. Suzanne Daveau. Contributor to Finisterra. Finisterra [online]. 2025, n.130, e44086.  Epub Dec 31, 2025. ISSN 0430-5027.  https://doi.org/10.18055/finis44086.

Suzanne Daveau was one of the founders of Finisterra in 1966. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, this paper examines the great diversity of the 98 works she published in the journal between 1966 and 2016, as well as her main reference works. The breadth of the author’s interests is evident, ranging from Historical Geography to studies in Physical Geography (particularly Geomorphology and Climatology), Regional Geography, Cartography, among others. In all these fields, she was innovative, including in the application of emerging techniques such as remote sensing, of which she was one of the pioneers in Portugal. She always defended and practised multidisciplinarity, favouring it over early specialisation. Many of the works analysed or cited have a strong pedagogical character, since Suzanne Daveau’s research activity was closely intertwined with her role as a teacher and supervisor to numerous students. Her commitment to preserving the memory of many researchers is highlighted. The text also refers to several accounts of the encouragement that Suzanne Daveau gave to “second-generation” students. She was always present at the various Finisterra initiatives, consistently offering support and encouragement to her followers.
