Juvenile Delinquency is the subject of the present papper, considering the sociologic and psychologic interpretations about it's ethiology, prevention and treatment. Several dimensions of delinquency are exposed, such as the normative relations between non-normative behaviors and adolescence as a way to achieve adaptation in conflit resolution situations. Pathological and normative behaviors are identified according to sociological and psychoanalitical theories. The need for primary prevention in vulnerable groups is underscored. Two of the main treatment strategies are discussed: institutionalization (promoted by the legal system) and non institutionalization (promoted by health services). Finally, future investigation pathways in Portugal are suggested.
