The article is part of an on-going research about the internationalisation of the Portuguese economy. It aims at analyzing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Portugal from a historical perspective. The data was gathered from secondary information published by ICEP, Bank of Portugal and Instituto Nacional de Estatística as well as from previous studies about FDI in Portugal. The article proposes six historical phases for FDI in Portugal in agreement with the national and international framework. In the last section some considerations are made about the future perspective of FDI.
