Resumen

CAMARGO, Fernanda Barini. Ema’s journeys - The representation of Douro’s narrative space in Vale Abraão, novel and film. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2024, n.51, pp.33-51.  Epub 30-Ene-2025. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/eo7x-pl1b.

This study examines the Douro region, focusing on the Douro River and water as key narrative elements in the works of Agustina Bessa-Luís and the films of Manoel de Oliveira. It analyzes Agustina’s novel Vale Abraão (1991), exploring its connections to Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, as well as Oliveira’s 1993 film Vale Abraão and its screenplay. The study investigates the adaptation of literature into film and explores the concept of “maternal space,” a feminine space as described by Gaston Bachelard. While Agustina highlights feminine themes, Oliveira addresses universal metaphysical issues, softening the patriarchal tension in her work.

Palabras clave : Agustina Bessa-Luís; Manoel de Oliveira; Portuguese literature; Portuguese cinema.
