Resumen
AGRA, Lorenna Lumack do Monte. “Tired, undesired, no defence, indifference” - An analysis of the feminine representation in T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2024, n.51, pp.108-120. Epub 30-Ene-2025. ISSN 0874-6885. https://doi.org/10.34619/ytkv-o3xr.
The Waste Land (1922) sparked debates on the treatment of the female question, especially in light of Gilbert and Gubar’s literary analysis (No Man’s Land: The Place of the Woman Writer in the Twentieth Century, 1988). This article proposes a careful textual analysis of Eliot’s techniques to determine if they encourage a misogynistic representation of the female figure as a symbol of passivity and lack of autonomy. It examines whether the use of biblical, classical, and mythological references reinforces a patriarchal view, aiming to contribute to the discussion on gender and representation in modernist literature.
