The branch of the visual arts related to menstruation (‘menstrala’: a term first used by Vanessa Tiegs) and associated themes (childbirth, motherhood, taboo) carries associations with the feminist movement, discrimination and the nature of female existence in gender-unbalanced contexts. These themes define important aspects of the work of two artists Portuguese artists expatriated in the United Kingdom: Ana Palma and, focused here to a lesser extent, Paula Rego.
