The aim of this article is to tell the story of Maria Rodrigues de Lima and Sueli Matos Azevedo as religious leaders of the Incelenças Group in Barbalha, Ceará. Using oral history, the reflections presented go through the narrators’ experiences from the position of power they occupy as leaders of a group of religious and Catholic women in the far south of Ceará, as well as the internal and external disputes and tensions within the group they lead. To understand the protagonism of these women as a force of resistance, renegotiation and leadership as they dispute positions and conquer spaces of power, the concepts of the religious field proposed by Bourdieu and gender are mobilized.
