NANCE, Douglas C.. Elena Arizmendi Mejía: Nurse, Revolutionary and Feminist: “Insubordinate and Rebellious”. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2025, n.53, pp.27-51.  Epub 12-Jan-2026. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/yc4q-e5fb.

Elena Arizmendi (1884-1949), revolutionary nurse and feminist liberal democrat, educated during the transition period of domestic caregiving and the professional autonomy. She clashed frequently with the sexist Mexican doctors of the time. During the Mexican Revolution of 1910, the Mexican Red Cross refused to care for wounded revolutionaries. She formed the Cruz Blanca Neutral Mexicana to care for all groups. Her career as a nurse was short, but longer as feminist and social activist. This work focuses on her years in nursing and beginnings of her activist and feminist thought.
