LHUILIER, Dominique. Work, what for?. Laboreal [online]. 2024, vol.20, n.1, e22032. Epub 31-Jul-2024. ISSN 1646-5237. https://doi.org/10.4000/120d3.
Attention to the purposes of work is a requirement commensurate with the contemporary impediments to thinking about and debating this issue. The intensification and dispersion of work, as well as its casualization, encourage a focus on the present to the detriment of the temporal projection implied by attention to its purposes. Life experiences reveal the conflicts of purpose (intrapsychic, interpersonal, social, political) at the heart of work. These experiences of biographical rupture, such as the health crisis and its confinements, can lead to a re-evaluation of the meaning of life and work. They enable us to break with the denial of the interdependence of our spheres of life and to revive the question of the meaning of work. Questions about the objectives pursued, the social usefulness of individual contributions, the possibility of associating work with personal, territorial, social and environmental development, and the associated ethical and political issues, all open up a vast field of debate that will enable us to remove work from the priority given to employment.
