Resumen

LOUREIRO, Luís; BATISTA, Inês; SIMOES, Rosa  y  ROSA, Amorim. Validation of the Dual Continua Model of Mental Health in higher education students. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2025, n.33, pp.58-71.  Epub 30-Jun-2025. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.394.

Context:

The Dual Continuum Model of Mental Health posits that mental health and mental well-being are distinct, yet interrelated constructs, both contributing to an individual's overall mental health.

Objective:

This study aimed to validate the Dual Continuum Model of Mental Health based on the criteria of confirming independent existence and disconfirming bipolarity.

Methodology:

A quantitative, descriptive-correlational study was conducted. The sample consisted of 226 young individuals newly integrated into higher education. Data collection utilized a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales, and the Mental Health Continuum Short Form. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM-SPSS version 28.0.

Results:

The findings indicate that the independence criterion is confirmed, as some young people exhibited high scores in psychological distress while simultaneously experiencing languishing. The bipolarity criterion was disconfirmed for anxiety and stress in relation to well-being. However, it was not disconfirmed for depression, where the suggested model appears to be bipolar.

Conclusions:

As proposed by the Dual Continuum Model, these results demonstrate that it's possible to improve mental well-being independently of an individual's mental health status, underscoring the importance of investing in mental health promotion.
