TURIEL, Filipa Daniela Vieira Gonçalves; FEITEIRA, Bruno Miguel Gomes Pereira e SOUSA, Clementina dos Prazeres Fernandes. Perception of suffering by patients in palliative care: a Scoping Review. Revista Onconews [online]. 2024, n.48, e0248. Epub 01-Set-2024. ISSN 1646-7868. https://doi.org/https//doi.org/10.31877/on.2024.48.03.
Introduction:
Suffering is complex and individual. It is essential to assess it for healthcare. The objective was to map the literature about the patients suffering in Palliative Care.
Method:
It was performed a scoping review, based on the Joanna Briggs Institute protocol. The research was carried out in three databases: CINAHL, Pubmed and Web of Science (studies published between January 1, 2017 and October 12, 2022).
Results:
Six articles were analyzed, published in Portugal, Italy and Canada, into inpatient and home settings.
Interpretation of results and conclusion:
Were identified 3 dimensions of suffering, somatic suffering, non-somatic suffering and experiential responses to disease situations. It is concluded that the perception of suffering is unique for each patient, with non-somatic suffering predominance, and its intensity is related to the way the patient reads his experiences.
