INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Scope and policy

    The Journal of Digital Media & Interaction (JDMI) is an international open-access journal, published two times a year, edited by the Digital Media and Interaction Research Centre (DigiMedia). DigiMedia is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) focusing on research in interaction design, classified as Very Good by the national evaluation system. The journal addresses research on digital media and user experience in creative, cultural, and social contexts. It focuses on the socio-technological challenges seen from a transdisciplinary perspective, grounded in media studies and interaction design, as well as in human-computer interaction, communication, cultural studies, design, and psychology.

Publishing

The journal adheres to the highest standards of peer review and engages established and emerging scholars from anywhere in the world.
The JDMI is based on a model of Open Access (OA) publishing: free online access, free to read, free of charge (no Article Processing Charges - APC to authors), available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 license.

The JDMI provides an open forum for discussion and monitoring of trends and transformations in the digital media landscape; the presentation of new design models and emergent technologies for the innovation of the user experience, the presentation of results from empirical studies, and innovative research approaches.

 

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Publication Process

All submitted manuscripts are initially assessed by the Editors, and, if found suitable, submitted to a double-anonymized peer review process. All submissions and peer review are conducted online. Papers should be submitted electronically according to editorial guidelines (see Template), thus incorrectly formatted papers will be rejected.

Scholarly papers are published in the Articles section of the JDMI Journal and are subject to a double-anonymized peer review process. Review texts are published in the Reviews section of the JDMI Journal and are not subject to peer-review.

After the manuscript is submitted to the Editor, it is sent to anonymous readers for peer review. Each manuscript is reviewed by two/three independent peer-reviewers selected from the editorial board or external peer-reviewers invited to review specific submissions. Manuscripts may be rejected or returned to the author prior to being sent for peer review if scope, structure, or content is lacking sufficient quality.

Authors are notified of acceptance, rejection or the need for revision within one to two months. Articles may be returned to the author for revisions once or more.

After a manuscript is accepted, it is edited at the editorial office where it will be styled to conform to JDMI's style, and returned to the author for approval prior to publication.

Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the editing and production process usually takes about one month. An accepted article may not appear in the immediately subsequent issue of the journal, at the discretion of the editor.

There are no Author Processing Fees. The publication is fully open access, and no fees are applied, either to authors or readers, at anytime.

 

Articles

Authors are invited to submit scholarly papers, under the stated aims and scope of the Journal of Digital Media and Interaction (JDMI).

The publishing language for the Journal is: English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Articles should be anonymized for double-anonymized peer review.

Articles must follow APA Reference Style, and it is mandatory to use Mendeley to insert automated references

Articles should follow the Template Guidelines, and should be between 4000 and 7000 words.

 

Reviews

JDMI also accepts reviews of books/films/games/apps of interest within the scope of the Journal of Digital Media and Interaction (JDMI).

Reviews should be between 1000 and 2500 words. 

 

Submitting Manuscripts Electronically

To submit a manuscript, authors must register on the journal submission system (make sure you check the "Author" role) and follow the submission process, by clicking the "New submission" link on the user Home:

  1. Select the journal section (Articles or Reviews) and verify the submission checklist.
  2. Upload the main file (Word document).
  3. Enter the submission metadata in English (author names, affiliation, abstract, keywords). And if not written in English, enter again the metada choosing your language to have access to the metada in your language (Portuguese, French or Spanish)
  4. Upload supplementary files. In this step you should provide a zip file with the image files used in the paper.
  5. Confirm the submission.

 

Copyright Information

Authors who publish in the JDMI agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0. This licensing allows others to share the work with no changes and acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal, but not for commercial use.

  2. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.

  3. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) after publication, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work.
  4. Copyrights to illustrations published in the journal remain with their current copyright holders.
  5. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to quote from copyright sources.
  6. Any fees required to obtain illustrations or to secure copyright permissions are the responsibility of authors.
