INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

Media & Journalism accepts original articles based on empirical and qualitative methodologies. We especially seek research that contributes decisively and innovatively to developing new methods of analysis, applying theoretical models of empirical investigation, discussing and applying heuristic concepts, identifying and analyzing emerging phenomena in the media field, while critically reflecting on the communicational and technological dynamics of contemporary society and launching new interpretations of media history.

Articles, book reviews and interviews from the full range of communication sciences are accepted for submission with particular emphasis on media studies and journalism. Issues of particular interest to Media & Journalism include: journalism, society and democracy; media and social identities; media history and transformation; communication and journalism ethics; media economics and politics; modes and strategies of political and strategic communication; information technologies and innovation in the media and journalism; new media forms of communication; journalists as an interpretive community; digital and transmedia literacy; and media pluralism and digital practice.

The accepted articles constitute the central section of the magazine, with a topic that serves as the title to each issue. Co-editors can be chosen by invitation or via a periodic call system.

    Journal Structure

Media & Journalism journal is organised into three sections:

Articles (Open submissions, indexed, peer review)

Varies1 (Open submissions, indexed, peer review)

Book reviews2 (Open Submissions, indexed, peer review)

1This short section may include articles that vary from the central themes and is edited by the ongoing journal editors.

2 This section is edited by one of the board members, either by invitation or in response to a direct request.

    Peer Review Process

    • All articles submitted to Media & Journalismo are subject to double blind peer review. If necessary, a third reviewer will be consulted.

    • Before the start of the blind peer review process, the editorial team of Media & Journalismo evaluates the suitability of each article based on the journal’s focus, scope and section policies. All articles that do not meet the journal’s submission criteria are returned to the authors within a maximum period of four weeks upon their receipt.

    • After the initial analysis of the articles by the editorial team of Media & Journalismo, each article that meets the journal's submission criteria is sent to two evaluators, who are chosen according to their experience in the area to which the articles relate. The review process always remains anonymous and can take up to six months to complete.

    • The chosen evaluators are asked to review the articles based on their relevance and originality in the field of journalism studies; to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each article, taking into account aspects such as the theoretical and methodological approaches followed; and to evaluate the validity of the results, the analyses and conclusions.

    • After receiving the evaluators’ comments, the editorial team of Media & Journalismo reports the results of the evaluations to the authors of the articles, indicating the final decision taken based on four categories: Publishable as is, Publishable with minor modifications, Publishable with major modifications, and Not Publishable.

    • If the article falls into the Publishable category with minor and major modifications, the author is invited to send, within a period of up to three months, a revised version that must address the evaluators’ comments. This revised version is returned to the initial reviewers for a reassessment of the article, which may take up to two months.

    Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
