INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Scope and policy

    População e Sociedade is a journal published by CEPESE, and has been published since 1995 on an annual basis and, starting in 2015, every six months and in an exclusively digital format. It is an academic publication with free access, working in accordance with demanding standards of the peer-reviewing system and aimed at both established academics and beginning researchers, national and international.

    It is normally divided into two sections: Thematic Dossier and Varia. Sometimes, another section is also included, Critical Reviews. Regarding the Thematic Dossier, it varies from number to number of the journal, with researchers invited by the editors-in-chief of the População e Sociedade to choose an appealing subject, current or more historical, to constitute the central theme of the referred dossier.

    A multidisciplinary journal, its areas of choice are History, International Relations, Political Science, Tourism, Cultural Heritage, Demography, Law and Migration. The objective is for the authors to present an original empirical investigation, with new methods of analysis and investigation, comparative studies, so that the journal encourages debate and interest in the areas that are addressed in each issue. With the multidisciplinarity of População e Sociedade, we intend that the journal reaches a greater number of interested people, both from the academic world (teachers, researchers, students), and from the general population.

 

Form and preparation of manuscripts

    Texts submitted to the journal must comply with the rules provided for on the CEPESE website (https://www.cepese.pt/portal/en/populacao-e-sociedade/instructions-for-authors), among them the authors must know that each article must have a maximum size of 60,000 characters (spaces included), spacing of 1.5; Times New Roman; body 12; margins 2.5 (top and bottom) and 3 (left and right), as well as each article must be accompanied by the title in English, two abstracts, one in the original language and the other in English, between 800 to 1,000 characters (spaces included ) each, and five keywords (in the original language and in English).

    Regarding the scientific arbitration process of the articles:

    1. Definition of a theme for the Thematic Dossier for each issue of the journal, after an invitation addressed by the editors-in-chief to one or more researchers, members of the Editorial or Advisory Boards, to coordinate the Dossier.

    2. Call for papers for the Thematic Dossier (e-mails, information on the website, invitations, etc.)

    3. Submission of the article in Word format by the author(s) to the journal's email (revista@cepese.pt), addressed to the editors-in-chief.

    4. Receipt of the article and first appraisal by the editors-in-chief as to compliance with the stipulated publication rules and regarding the actual content of the work. The appreciation of the articles is extended to the researchers who coordinated the respective Thematic Dossier.

    5. After this “first evaluation”, communication to the author(s) of the article of the acceptance or not of its text. If so, the text will be submitted to scientific arbitration, on an anonymous basis, and the Word file will be sent without any personal identifying element of the author(s) and an evaluation grid, by e-mail, to two members of the team. our Editorial Board or the Advisory Board, in case the topic is from your research area, or we resort to other professors/researchers/external specialists, who are more familiar with the theme covered in the article, and that are part of our list of referees. These responses are sent to the journal's e-mail for the attention of the editors-in-chief who, together with some elements of the two Boards, exchange views and discuss the comments that were made for each article.

    6. In case of a positive opinion on the part of the referees, the author of the article will be notified by e-mail that it has been approved for publication, being sent the two “clean” documents of referees, in PDF format, so that they are not aware evaluators of their work. If there is a tie, the journal's management will invite another referee to break the tie and, thus, decide whether the article has conditions for publication or not. In the event that the article is rejected by the two referees, this decision will be communicated to the author, who will be advised by the editors-in-chief to make a thorough review of the work if he wants to resubmit the article for publication in the População e Sociedade.

    7. With the approval of the referees, their opinion (annotations in text and in the evaluation grid, always guaranteeing the anonymity of the evaluators) will be duly sent by e-mail to the author(s) of the article, who must follow the guidelines given in that document. in order to improve and perfect your text.

    8. After completing this task, the author(s) must send the final version of the article to the journal's e-mail, ready for publication.
