Abstract
FRAGATA, F.; SA, M.; GNECCO, C. and SILVA, L.. Development of practical procedure for the identification of finish paint in field, aiming assist in the specification of maintenance paint system. Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2014, vol.33, n.4, pp.78-86. ISSN 0870-1164.
When specifying maintenance paint systems, especially for application over an aged coating, it is very important to consider the product type in both systems to avoid premature failures due to compatibility problems between paints. The identification of paint films can be conducted in the laboratory by means of organic analysis techniques such as infrared spectroscopy. These techniques depend on sophisticated equipment and skilled labour to be carried out. Furthermore, they require some time for execution and it is not always possible to wait for the results of these analyses. In this paper, a procedure to identify paint films in field will be shown. The proposed procedure does not involve the use of sophisticated equipment and is easy to perform. It was developed using the results from extensive research work with different finishing paints, as well as the technical information contained in ASTM D 5043 Standard. However, as referred in the last version of this Standard (2009), such procedure is not appropriate if more detailed analysis is required, for example, as a part of failure analysis or to identify between different manufacturers of the same type of coating. They also may not be definitive enough to identify complex systems that include multiple layers of different generic types of coatings. The evaluation of results is quite subjective. Practice and experience are required.
