CARVALHO, Luís e MAIA, Catarina. Civic entrepreneurs and smart cities: practices, motivations and innovation geographies. GOT [online]. 2016, n.10, pp.95-112. ISSN 2182-1267. https://doi.org/10.17127/got/2016.10.005.
The discourse about smart city innovation has been shifting its focus from large corporate-driven initiatives towards considering the role of civically committed and tech savvy citizens as locus of innovation. These communities of citizens - also dubbed as civic hackers - are gaining ground in several smart city strategies; yet, still little is known about their motivations and the geographies they mobilize in their initiatives. Therefore, this article has three main objectives, namely i) to explore concepts and practices of civic hackers; ii) to shed light on their motivations to contribute to the resolution of civic challenges and iii) to hypothesise on the role of the territory and geography for their processes of knowledge creation and innovation.
