Abstract

MENDES, Thiago M.  and  CARVALHO, Luís. Geographies of knowledge production on coronavirus: a global analysis and of the portuguese-speaking countries. Finisterra [online]. 2020, n.115, pp.43-51.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 0430-5027.  https://doi.org/10.18055/finis20335.

This paper explores the changing geographies of scientific knowledge production about the coronavirus disease, before and five months after the current epidemic outbreak. A comparison with recent research suggests a link between a country’s knowledge production centrality in scientific co-authorship networks and their respective positions throughout the global epidemiological spread of the Coronavirus. Specifically, regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, until now, they remain in a peripheral position in the global context, although the crisis has increased their relative productivity and integration in the global network. These results suggest that epidemic outbreaks changed the countries’ positions in global knowledge systems influencing their abilities to produce, intermediate and access global knowledge.
