The article focuses on a less known side of José Saramago's professional life: the years during which he was a translator. The analysis of Saramago's translation of The Age of the Cathedrals, by Georges Duby allows us to evaluate the effect of his work as a translator on his literary career. The Age of the Cathedrals probably represented a fundamental contribution to the writer's intellectual and aesthetic development since, as the study of his historiographical fiction reveals, he assimilated the methodologies and theories advocated by the New History. We have selected the novel History of the Siege of Lisbon to examine the intersections between Saramago's and new historians' work, specifically Duby's masterpiece. Proposing a different approach to José Saramago's work that uses his translations as a point of departure is, in our view, a relevant project. The present paper is just the start of this project.
